Buildings account for a large share of energy use and emissions, and for most owners the electricity bill is the first visible cost of poor design, ageing plant and unmanaged operation. Property and facilities teams are now asked to cut consumption, lower carbon and show verified results. Five days give participants a structured route from baseline to delivery. Sessions cover metering and benchmarking, walk-through and detailed energy audits, envelope, lighting, HVAC and controls measures, rooftop solar and storage, and carbon accounting for operational emissions. Delegates also work with energy performance indicators, ISO 50001 principles, the IPMVP approach to measurement and verification, and green building rating concepts.
The programme is written for facilities and estates managers, building services engineers, architects, property developers, sustainability officers, energy managers, public works staff and consultants preparing retrofit proposals. Classroom, online and in-house delivery are offered, with sample utility bills and building data used for exercises. Afterwards you can set an energy baseline, rank measures by payback and carbon saved, write a decarbonisation plan, specify procurement and track results. Those who complete the work receive a CPD-accredited Certificate of Completion.
Rising tariffs, unreliable supply and stronger expectations from investors, tenants and regulators are pushing building owners to treat energy as something to be managed rather than simply paid for. Yet many organisations lack a reliable baseline, cannot say which systems drive consumption, and launch retrofit projects without a plan for financing, procurement or confirming that savings were delivered.
This programme follows the sequence a real decarbonisation project takes. Participants start by collecting and normalising energy data, calculating intensity indicators and mapping end uses. They then learn audit methods and evaluate measures across building fabric, lighting, cooling and ventilation, controls, pumping, and on-site renewable generation. Financial appraisal using simple payback, life-cycle cost and carbon abatement cost helps rank options, while sessions on funding routes, performance contracting, procurement and commissioning explain how plans become projects. The closing sessions cover operational behaviour, monitoring dashboards and verification of savings.
Teaching is workshop based. Participants analyse utility bills, interpret audit findings and build a prioritised plan for a case-study building, then adapt the same method to a property from their own portfolio.
By the end of the programme, participants will be able to:
